Alice Buckler
A life in devon and cornwall
Early Life and First Marriage
Alice Buckler was born on January 25th to William Buckler and Mary Hocking. Notably, her parents were already in their fifties at the time of her birth. Alice grew up as one of nine children, and while her siblings all remained in England throughout their lives, Alice’s own journey would eventually take her across county lines.
At the age of eighteen, Alice married Dennis Jennings, the son of Thomas Jennings and Elizabeth Bate. Their wedding took place on October 11, 1797, at St. John’s Church in Bradworthy. Both Alice and Dennis were practicing Anglicans. Two years later, at the age of twenty, Alice gave birth to their only child, Dennis Jennings Jr.
Widowhood and Second Marriage
Alice’s life took a sharp turn in 1806. At just 26 years old, she became a widow following the death of her first husband. Later that same year, on January 15, 1806, she married William Harris. William, the son of William Harris and Mary Leoman, was also a native of Bradworthy, born on April 30, 1780.
2nd marriage record.
Later Years and Legacy
Alice and William soon began a family of their own. Four years into their marriage, Alice gave birth to their first son together, Richard. By 1815, the family had moved from Devon to Cornwall, where their third son, Parmenas, was born.
Alice gave birth to her final child in 1820 at the age of 41. She lived the remainder of her life in Cornwall, passing away on November 13, 1848, at the age of 69.
